Gamay: Vegetarian
The Gamay grape is vastly under-rated in the present market and its history certainly hasn’t been helped by association with the Beaujolais Nouveau circus which came to a peak at the turn of 2000. But don’t let that put you off. Wine from the Gamay is usually bursting with vibrant flavours and fruit.
Certainly this offering from Louis Jadot Chapelle aux Loups is no exception and given it is presently reduced by £3 plus a further 25% with the purchase of 6 bottles or more, marks something of a bargain which is worthy of exploration.
You will not be disappointed. Coming from the heart of the Burgandy wine producing region it is delightfully packed with juicy dark summer fruit aromas and a pleasant lingering taste in the mouth. Surprisingly the fruitiness feels a little subdued, favouring a little more in the way of substance over quaffability but the net effect is a delightful wine which makes for a good, light drinking companion with most foods.
The case is further strengthened in light of the fact that this is a vegetarian wine, though at 13% in volume it is not a light-weight. This is a pleasant all year round wine which will never disappoint and almost certainly become a regular favourite.
