Probably best known for its Zinfandel wines, the Lodi region stands in the Central Valley of California and produces some of the most consistently beautiful red wines originating from the USA. The climate is perfect for the dark grapes which ripen under a warm sun and contribute to remarkable examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel – and this particularly outstanding Shiraz.
I won’t beat around the proverbial bush: this is a stunning wine. Hold it to the light and little gets through: a halo surrounds a dark, inky, lusciously deep crimson wine. Give it a swirl and the most delightful, intense and juicy smells of summer come pouring out.
The first mouthful is worth holding and savouring. There are almost overwhelming waves of expansive, powerful, berry flavours, packed with mellow, rich, juicy fruit. It surprises, delights and enchants. The taste is smooth, velvety and lingers with a satisfying presence long after swallowing.
There is a lightly spicy edge to the flavour which can give it something of a noticeable and intrusive kick every now and then. And at 14.5%, it does a very good job of hiding the fact that this a big wine full of character, spirit and life. Affably quaffable, you will find yourself wondering what happened to the rest of the bottle. Fortunately, however, no headache the next morning. Enjoy!
